Operating Engineer (Offshore Fire Safety Systems)
Unit Grid Field Operations Offshore (GFO-O):
TenneT is making a major contribution to ensure that offshore wind farms are connected to the onshore high-voltage grid. These efforts are aimed at realizing the government’s vision of an accelerated transition to a sustainable energy supply. TenneT is fully committed to develop, build, and manage grid connections from offshore wind farms to the onshore transmission grid. Grid Service Offshore is the Service Provider for these grid connections.
In 2020, the first two Dutch offshore substations, Borssele Alpha and Beta became operational. We now have 6 700 MW AC offshore substations and more expected on the horizon. Within Grid Field Operations, an Operations and Maintenance department is set up for the Dutch offshore assets.

The Operating Engineer enables the operation of the new 700MW offshore converter stations, through management of all preventive & corrective maintenance measures including warranty with the contractor, resolution of operational issues and execution of assigned improvement projects for electrical, automation, cable, and associated systems.
As Operating Engineer, you are also deeply involved in operational and organisational readiness to take-over new project assets, ensuring that operational requirements are met. You can work independently and tackle issues on a systemic as well as an incidental basis. You are able to operate as a project lead on small projects. On larger projects you can act as Senior User within the executive, ensuring the project delivers the intended benefits.
Tasks and responsibilities of the Operating Engineer include:
• You set the technical direction for operations and maintenance;
• Manage a portfolio of small projects, prioritizing work according to risk and financial considerations;
• Identify defects and non-compliances from project design and manage these under a warranty process with key vendors

• Routine monitoring and fault management resolution by coordination of required activities and organising or providing technical support;
• Managing the timely preparation, execution and administrative completion of maintenance activities and prioritization of these activities on platform and cable systems;
• Provide technical input and Lessons Learned to enable future safe and efficient operations and maintenance of existing and new assets.

• Manage and evaluate service contracts with key vendors, including tender documents, evaluation of bids, negotiations and ensuring effective contract delivery.
Candidate profile:
• Engineering degree on BSc or MSc level with at least 5+ years of relevant work experience in offshore platforms or related field;
• Relevant knowledge and experience working offshore and working on maintenance projects and understands the dynamics between the different systems;
• Familiar with operational environments and usage of maintenance management system like i.e. SAP, Maximo, Ultimo where SAP experience is highly desired;
• Thorough understanding of fire alarm systems, particularly Tyco and Semco, including their installation, programming, operation, and maintenance;
• Proficiency in installing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing various fire alarm systems components (such as smoke detectors, alarms, control panels);
• Knowledge of different fire extinguishing systems, including water-based, foam, gas, and chemical suppression systems;
• Familiarity with local and international fire safety codes and standards;
• Affinity with network architectures as per perdue model or ISA-99 and the interface of IT and OT infrastructure;
• Being a team player, supporting the Grid Connection Manager with Scope of work, Quality Assurance, Risks assessments and needed interfacing on all levels and departments;
• Act as discipline lead on multiple simultaneous projects, leading design efforts and managing project execution;
• Manage and evaluate service contracts with key vendors, including tender documents, evaluation of bids, negotiations and ensuring effective contract delivery;
• You understand the value of asset data and documentation to operations, so you ensure that maintenance information is recorded correctly to enable safe and efficient operation;
• Proven cooperation and communications skills are essential.
Good to know:
• Reason for the publication: an internal candidate is leaving TenneT. In fact a replacement requisition;
• Candidate will be responsible for upgrade projects (small Capex / Opex projects) to improve. Bigger part is regular maintance, whereby TenneT works with workorders (per year). Candidate will also work for new platforms (smaller part of the job); is the platform built according to the standards, is there something wrong, how to fix it, etc.;
• TenneT is not looking for someone who is hands-on / operational (not arrange / fix things), the focus is to guide the contractors. The candidate is in fact a kind of projectmanager (not a teammanager!) for hundreds of small projects (based on the workorders);
• Candidate needs to have in depth knowledge of Fire Safety Systems, especially Tyco / Semco (required!);
• Offshore experience is a pré, but not required. Candidate with experience with fire safty systems in the oil & gas, petrochemical plants or building management (if they have experience with Tyco / Semco) is also an option. Candidate can also have experience with a contractor. Candidate with operational exoerience (installed that kind of installations in the past) and who is looking for a step up (away from the operation, but to control and guide) is also an option;
• Candidate has to speak at least fluent English. Dutch is highly preferable!
Conditions:
• At entry, TenneT performs a Pre-Employment Screening;
• Duty station for this position is Arnhem (at least 1 day a week, normally on Monday);
• Candidate has to be available 40 hours per week,. An availability of 32 hours is not an option;
• Candidate has to work offshore for on average a few days per month;
• An offshore medical examination and a number of required trainings (GWO, etc.) must be performed with a positive outcome on a regular basis;
• Detavast is preferable, a freelancer is also a temporary option;
• For the permanent position (detavast) applies: Offshore deployments and first line response (Storingswachtdienst) are an integral part of the job also support to projects outside the Netherlands, if needed.
Additional information:
• Suppliers must be aware of the laws and regulations regarding employment conditions and Tennet’s Collective Labour Agreement. This assignment is placed in scale 8;
